Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Welcome, we are really excited to get to know you and your children this year and work on some exciting units together. We have lots of different topics coming up this year and this page will give you all of the key information you need to know throughout.

Staff supporting Year 6 this year are;

Mrs Wall

Miss Webley

Mrs Spriggs

Mrs Plose-Joyce

Miss Graham (currently covered by Mrs Ali)

Miss Daley

PE Days

This year we will have PE each Wednesday morning. Please ensure your child comes to school in appropriate PE clothing each and every Wednesday. Remember children will wear these clothes during break time and dinner time so must be appropriate for the weather.

Homework

Reading- your child is expected to read at home at least 3 times each week along with an adult signing their reading record. As your children are getting a little older we will allow them to sign it themselves for an independent read too – records will be check every Monday for the week prior.

Maths- your child will need to know all of their times tables up to 12x12 and other related facts for their end of Key Stage assessments. To help with this they are encouraged to play times tables games each and every day at home using the following games/platforms.

Numbots- https://numbots.com/schools/

TTRhttps://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student/48457
Hit the button - https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
Maths Frame- https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/477/Multiplication-Tables-Check

Please also feel free to ask staff for any other practice materials in regards to their SATs.

Spelling- Children will have a focus 5 spellings but will not be tested on these. They will need to evidence them in their writing on a day-day basis.

Humanities/Science- Children will be given a project planner each half term that ties into the topic unit they are covering at that time. A paper copy will be sent home but you will also be able to find it on the tab on the left hand side of this page.

Our Current Topic – Spring 1

During the Spring term, in Year 6, we cover the following units:

The HG Hunger Games (Geography)

We will be explicitly teaching mapping skills and ensuring our pupils can read and make them. We will also explore the grid referencing system and become familiar with 8 point compasses. We will also look at a variety of different representations of a location and discuss the usefulness of each type of map.

Science

Evolution and Inheritance

Children will be taught to recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago. They will recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents and identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution

Please take a look at our Curriculum (located in the letters tab on the left of this page) to find out what else we will be learning in all other areas of the curriculum.
