Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to Year 6 at Hall Green Primary School. This is an exciting and important year when children develop independence, take on new responsibilities and prepare for their move to secondary school.

We are looking forward to working closely with you and your children throughout the year. Year 6 is a busy and rewarding time, with exciting topics, special events and opportunities for children to grow in confidence as they get ready for SATs and the transition to Year 7.

Meet the Year 6 Team

Our Year 6 staff work closely together to support children both academically and emotionally during their final year of primary school.

Key Information

PE Day

PE takes place on Wednesday mornings.

Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on Wednesdays. As children will wear this throughout the day, please ensure clothing is suitable for the weather.


SATs and Preparation

Year 6 children will complete their end of Key Stage 2 SATs assessments in the summer term. These assessments measure progress in:

  • Reading

  • Maths

  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling

Throughout the year, we support children to feel confident, prepared and positive about SATs. If you would like additional support materials, please speak to a member of staff.


Transition to Year 7

Year 6 is an important time for preparing children for secondary school.

During the year, children will take part in a range of transition activities designed to help them feel confident and ready for Year 7.

Homework

Homework helps children develop independence and prepare for SATs.

Reading

Children are expected to read at home at least three times each week.

Reading records should be signed by an adult or by the child for independent reading and will be checked each Monday/Tuesday by our in-class monitors.

Children should bring their reading records into school each day.


Maths

Children should practise their times tables up to 12 × 12 and related facts regularly to support their maths learning and SATs preparation.

Spelling

Children will have five focus spellings to practise regularly. These words will not be tested weekly but should appear in their everyday writing.

Children will be tested once each term on the Year 5 and 6 common exception words.


Our Learning

Year 6 children study a wide range of subjects across the year.

We regularly share photos of our learning, so please check the Photos tab to see what we have been doing in class.

Each half-term children will also receive a project planner linked to their Humanities or Science topic. A paper copy will be sent home and a digital copy can also be found in the Letters tab.

Year 6 is an important and memorable year, and we aim to support every child to finish primary school feeling confident, successful and ready for their next step.
