Hall Green Primary School

Year 6- Our first half term

WONDERing what we have been up to? Read on to find out...

The transition from Year 5 to Year 6 is not always an easy one but Year 6 children have certainly had a fantastic start! We have dived into the depths of the Last Wild written by Piers Torday- we all truly fell in love with that book. The book linked with our first unit in Science, Classified. This was where the children explored the world and the animals that live within it. Our natural progression was then to move on to study how the animals and plants have evolved, adapted and changed to suit the needs of environments. We have a text that links to each of our units of study and for our Survival of the Fittest unit (evolution) we chose the book Wonder by RJ Palacio. It’s a book that explores the realms of transition to a new school, children facing adversity and the way everybody is different. It links brilliantly to our Anti-Bullying poetry unit. Through our English sessions children have covered a range of units: short stories, non-chronological report, formal letters, poetry and character descriptions. My gosh, there has been some brilliant writing! During maths, we have covered place value, negative numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication and the dreaded long division. All of these units have been applied to real life situations including running our own bank accounts for a lesson. There is nothing like a little healthy competition so there has been a Times Tables Rockstars competition running and the winners are currently the boys! The girls will need to pick it up in the next half term. I hope you’re all looking forward to the next half term as much as we are. We have our residential to Frank Chapman, we have two stunning learning challenges (Black Powder and Hall Green Hunger Games), fractions, decimals and percentages in maths and then the build up to Christmas and our performances.
