The Rights of a Child
Upon returning to school every September, it is commonplace for class teachers to sit their classes down and explain, and agree upon, a set of class rules...but not this year!
The children have spent their first week creating class charters that display both their rights and their responsibilities.
Discussions have taken place about what rights both children and teachers have when they come to school. Eg. The right to be listened to, the right to have an opinion, etc.
Children and teachers have worked together, engaged in productive discussions and prepared a list of rights and responsibilities that reflect their wishes, that will be displayed in place of the standard set of rules. Children understand that responsibilities are the actions and choices they make to enable them and others to enjoy their rights.
What a fascinating first few days back! It has been wonderful to see our children taking such an important class discussion so seriously!
