Writing at Hall Green
At Hall Green, we believe every child can be a confident, creative writer. Our writing curriculum inspires children to express themselves, explore ideas, and communicate with purpose.
From the very beginning of each academic year, we prioritise securing the fundamental building blocks of writing. We explicitly teach Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar to strengthen sentence control and ensure secure subject–verb agreement. This early focus allows children to internalise accurate sentence structure and develop writing that is both clear and purposeful.
We revisit and embed irregular verb patterns and take a morphological approach to spelling, helping children understand how words are formed and how meaning can be built through prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Alongside this, we continue to reinforce the key foundations of phonics and known grapheme-phoneme correspondences, ensuring that all children have the essential tools needed for fluent writing.
Drafting is an ongoing and developmental process across all year groups. Children are encouraged to see writing as something to refine and improve over time. We place increasing emphasis on purposeful editing, with a particular focus on verb choice as a key driver of impact, helping children to understand how powerful verbs can transform creativity, tone and meaning.
For children who are not yet fully ready to write independently, we ensure full access to the curriculum through drawing club, Story Dough and other carefully planned early writing experiences. These approaches ensure that children are still immersed in rich language and storytelling opportunities while their core skills are being consolidated. This provision is particularly important in EYFS and KS1.
In addition to this, we use approaches such as colourful semantics and structured sentence pattern building to deepen understanding of grammar, syntax, and meaning. These strategies help children to develop increasingly sophisticated sentences and a stronger grasp of how language works.
We use carefully chosen core texts to spark imagination, alongside real-life writing opportunities that show children the power and purpose of their words. Our approach builds strong foundations and develops skills that last a lifetime:
- Phonics and spelling: children master the building blocks of words through phonics (Little Wandle) and morphological approaches
- Handwriting: Kinetic Letters and joined handwriting support fluency, control, and automaticity
- Sentence and language skills: strong focus on sentence formation, vocabulary, grammar, and accurate structure
- Creativity and style: children develop their own voice and flourish as imaginative writers
Our curriculum is flexible and responsive, tailored each year to the needs, interests, and strengths of our children.
