Whole School Curriculum
Our Curriculum
At Hall Green Primary School, we provide a broad and balanced curriculum that meets children’s needs, develops their knowledge and skills, and raises their aspirations. Children in Nursery and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, while pupils in Years 1–6 follow the National Curriculum.
Our curriculum is underpinned by the belief that “possibilities are endless and anything is possible.” We broaden children’s horizons through opportunities and experiences that help them understand the world and recognise the possibilities open to them.
We aim for every child to become a happy, confident and well-rounded individual, equipped for the next stage of education and life beyond school. We promote respect for others and prepare children to contribute positively to our diverse society.
Learning is sequenced so that children build on their previous knowledge and develop increasingly secure understanding. Pupils take an active role in their learning, with opportunities to ask questions, share ideas and reflect on their progress.
English and Mathematics
Five hours of English and five hours of mathematics are timetabled each week, with longer sessions allocated where appropriate. Meaningful links with other subjects help children apply their learning in different contexts.
Additional sessions support reading, phonics and mental arithmetic through shared reading, guided reading and focused practice.
In writing, Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar develops the foundations children need to communicate clearly. Children apply their skills across a range of text types, purposes and audiences.
History and Geography
History and geography are taught in planned blocks, with units organised chronologically or seasonally where appropriate. Children revisit and extend previous learning, making connections between topics and year groups.
In history, pupils develop their understanding of chronology, evidence and interpretation, cause and consequence, change and continuity, similarities and differences, and historical significance.
In geography, pupils develop locational and place knowledge, explore human and physical geography, and use fieldwork and data collection to investigate their surroundings.
Each unit concludes with an enquiry question that enables children to draw on their learning and demonstrate their understanding. Discussions about careers, travel and real-world experiences help pupils recognise the wider possibilities linked to these subjects.
Science
Science is taught through carefully sequenced units that develop knowledge and scientific skills across year groups. Units are organised seasonally where appropriate, creating opportunities for children to discuss related learning with pupils across the school.
An engaging introductory lesson sparks curiosity at the start of each unit. Lessons are structured around questions that children investigate and work towards answering.
Group floor books capture children’s learning and provide opportunities to discuss, revisit and reflect on their work. Pupils contribute to how their learning is presented and shared.
Science also develops teamwork and communication. Children explore careers connected to their learning, helping them understand how science shapes everyday life and future opportunities.
Computing
Our computing curriculum develops children’s understanding of information technology and computer science through a range of hardware and software. We draw on different schemes and adapt teaching to meet our pupils’ needs.
Online safety is a central part of our provision. It is taught explicitly at planned points and reinforced throughout computing lessons, PSHE and assemblies. Children learn to use technology safely and responsibly as they prepare for secondary school.
Personal Social Health and Economic Education
PSHE is taught through planned lessons and reinforced through assemblies and everyday school life.
Children learn about physical health and wellbeing, growing and changing, families and friendships, safe relationships, and respecting themselves and others. They also explore belonging to a community, media literacy, digital resilience, and money and work.
Our provision helps pupils recognise and manage their feelings, build positive relationships, understand differences and make informed choices about keeping safe.
Physical Education
Every child takes part in PE each week, delivered by our sports coach. Pupils develop movement skills, teamwork and confidence through games, dance, gymnastics, athletics and fitness activities.
After-school sports clubs provide further opportunities for children from Reception upwards. Year 4 pupils also attend swimming lessons at a local swimming pool.
Music and Art
Music and art are taught by our specialist teacher. Children develop their creativity, practise techniques and explore different forms of expression.
Year 3 pupils learn to play steel pans. Individual instrumental tuition is also available through weekly lessons in school with a Sandwell music teacher.
Religious Education
We follow the Sandwell Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.
Pupils explore religious and non-religious beliefs, values and ways of life. They develop their understanding of different communities and consider questions about how beliefs influence people’s lives.
Spanish
Spanish is our chosen modern foreign language. Pupils in Key Stage 2 have timetabled lessons each week.
Children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 are introduced to Spanish through everyday routines, such as greetings and answering the register.
