Learning in Nursery
Nursery is the start of your child’s learning journey. We aim to give every child the best possible start, helping them to develop confidence, independence and a love of learning.
Our learning is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage, which supports development in:
-
Communication and Language
-
Physical Development
-
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
-
Literacy
-
Mathematics
-
Understanding the World
-
Expressive Arts and Design
We recognise that every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Our curriculum is flexible so that we can respond to children’s individual needs and interests.
We place a strong emphasis on communication and language, supporting children to develop speaking and listening skills through:
-
Conversations
-
Stories
-
Songs and rhymes
-
Role play
-
Play with friends
Child-Initiated Play
Children learn through a balance of adult-led activities and child-initiated play both indoors and outdoors.
During child-initiated play, children explore activities independently while adults support learning through conversation, questions and modelling play.
Children may be:
-
Building and creating
-
Playing imaginatively
-
Exploring outdoors
-
Drawing and mark making
-
Sharing stories
-
Developing friendships
Writing begins in Nursery through mark making, tracing and early pencil control, helping children build the skills they need for writing in Reception.
Learning is often based around topics, but we adapt activities to follow children’s interests and curiosity.
Supporting Your Child’s Progress
We carefully observe and support each child’s development throughout the year.
Staff get to know each child well and use observations to plan activities that support their next steps in learning.
Children complete a Nursery baseline assessment when they start.
This helps us understand your child’s starting points and support their development as they move towards Reception.
Working in Partnership
We believe children do best when school and families work together.
We are always happy to talk and support you with any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you to make your child’s Nursery experience happy, exciting and successful.
