Reception
Welcome to Reception
We are delighted to welcome you to Reception at Hall Green Primary School. This is a very special year when children settle into school life, build friendships and develop confidence as learners.
Our Reception classes are happy, nurturing and exciting places to learn. We aim to give every child the best possible start to their school journey, helping them to feel safe, valued and ready to learn.

Key Information
Outdoor Learning
Children will enjoy outdoor learning throughout the year, including regular visits to our Forest School area and daily outdoor play. To ensure they can take part comfortably in all weather, please provide suitable outdoor clothing such as a waterproof coat and wellies, along with spare clothes that can be worn over or changed into alongside their usual school uniform. These items can be kept in school so that children are always ready for outdoor learning. Having spare outdoor clothing helps children explore, play and learn outside in all seasons without worrying about getting wet or muddy.
PE
PE takes place on Thursdays.
Please send your child to school with their clearly labelled PE kit in their bag. We encourage children to dress themselves independently and appreciate your support in practising this at home.
Learning in Reception
In Reception, children learn through a mix of play, practical activities and focused teaching.
Our curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, supporting children’s development in:
-
Communication and Language
-
Physical Development
-
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
-
Literacy
-
Mathematics
-
Understanding the World
-
Expressive Arts and Design
We place a strong emphasis on communication and language, helping children to develop confidence in speaking and listening.
Children take part in daily phonics, reading, writing and maths sessions, alongside child-initiated time when they explore and learn through play.
Our curriculum is flexible so that we can follow children’s interests as well as their learning needs, helping every child make progress at their own pace.
Learning Through Play
Child-initiated time is an important part of Reception. During this time, children learn by exploring activities both indoors and outdoors.
They might be:
-
Building and creating
-
Acting out stories
-
Exploring the natural world
-
Drawing and writing
-
Playing collaboratively
-
Solving problems
Adults support children’s learning through conversations, questions and guidance.
Supporting Your Child’s Progress
We get to know each child well and carefully support their development throughout the year.
Children complete a Reception Baseline Assessment during their first few weeks at school.
At the end of Reception, teachers complete the EYFS Profile, which helps support a smooth transition into Year 1.
Working in Partnership
We believe that children do best when school and families work together.
We are always happy to talk and support you with any questions or concerns. We look forward to working together to make your child’s Reception year happy, exciting and successful.
